The Fashion Bloggers Guide to New York’s Fashion Week

I’ve been going to New York Fashion Week shows for six years now, covering New York Fashion Week for two years-mainly on social media networks.  The first couple of times-I was caught up in the hype, paparazzi and of course the fashion.  With all the excitement going on – something always goes wrong.  I want to share my secrets of staying sane and tips to get you thru the lines and into your well deserved seat – before the show starts.   Below I’ve compiled some helpful tips I’ve picked up over the years to help both bloggers new to New York Fashion Week, as well as the pros.

Tip #1) Getting Show Invites Your best bet is to register with IMG for accreditation — provide them with your blog website, mainly your articles relevant to  fashion week (upcoming designers, unique writeups about fashion trends, trunk shows that you have attended, etc).  I suggest you find out when the registration opens, so you can fill out the application asap and early registration fee is $60.00.  Once your application is complete, with all of your info – the PR contracts for the designers will invite you to their shows (based on your site and credentials).

If you’re nervous about applying or don’t feel so established that you may not be approved that’s okay, there’s still hope! I recommend going to Modem Online and using their press contacts page to get the contact/PR information for the designers that are showing and the presentations or shows you’d like to attend – this site has a pretty extensive list of  press information.   Send a customized, professional cover letter requesting an invite and explain what your site does and why you’d like to attend.  Note:  Do not put that you would like to attend because you think it would be a cool experience.  Please have a valid reason.  Don’t forget to include links from your site, other websites or publications you may have provided fashion coverage (provide them some stats about your site, even if it’s just mentioning the demographic or how the site is rapidly growing, etc).  Chances are you’ll at least get a few invites this way — you just have to let the PR reps know that you’re out there in the online fashion community and interested in their brand/designer.

Tip #2) Writing about the Shows/Presentations Now that you’ve got a few shows under your belt and excited to be covering New York Fashion Week, you’ve got to find some time, and a place, to write! Most likely you’ll have some down time in between shows, which is a good time to try to get some write-ups done. Unfortunately, there isn’t a formal press lounge at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Bryant Park, so in the past I’ve had to make do with sitting towards the back of the tents at the few tables that are vacant to take some notes or waiting until I’m exhausted out of my mind and at home around 11pm at night to write until 1 am.  There are better options though, if you don’t live nearby or can run to your hotel in the vicinity.  The best option I can give you is to contact HauteLook.  The website HauteLook.com is sponsoring a lounge in the Bryant Park Hotel from February 11th-18th for bloggers and free wi-fi provided by Sony.  If all else fails – there is always Starbucks!

Tip #3) Make it Known That You’re Covering Fashion Week! If possible, its great to be prompt with your posts to help boost search traffic, but there are other ways of getting the word out there that you’re live at fashion week and posting about what you see.  Last year, I attended the Custo Barcelona show-no sooner did I arrive, that I found out it was overbooked-Fashion bloggers were outraged.  It was a shame to see the people who did not get in, look at the screen in the tents to see the show that they were supposed to attend.  The next day, bloggers who were not let in but who were confirmed to attend wrote about what happened.  This caused the designers PR firm to throw  their hands up in the air and apologize for the overbooking of attendees.

Twitter friends, make sure to give appropriate tags when you are tweeting about fashion week – #NYFW.   This abbreviation/hastag posts your tweets on New York’s Fashion Week and allows fashion lovers to find your news feeds and follow you for more info.   InsideTheTents.com  provides behind the scenes look at fashion week and designer interviews. Click here to apply for membership. Also, remember those PR contacts you emailed? If you write about the brand/designer they represent, don’t wait for them to find your post — send them a follow-up email with the link to the post – they’ll sure appreciate it, and most likely add you to their press contacts (networking is key in any business relationship and once your name is recognized, you’ll be invited to future events).

Tip#4) Don’t Forget to Take Care of Yourself! Fashion week can be a lot of fun and very exciting, throwing your normal schedule completely out the window.  I find myself in Soho putting together my outfits for the show-instead of going to the gym.  During fashion week my diet consists of  lots of coffee, a bran muffin, and a salad.  You will crash or get sick if you don’t come equipped with proper nutrients ( another mistake I made). Bring lightweight, protein filled snacks that will satisfy your hunger pains — granola bars, power bars, trail mix— not the most sought after options, but when running around, waiting in line to check-in, waiting in line to get into a show, seeing the show, and doing it all again, you will be so thankful to just whip that snack out of your bag.  Also, dress in layers due to temperature changes in the tent.

Tip #5) Skip the Parties, Not the Shows. It’s  is very enticing to be invited to VIP parties, after-parties for designers, and the countless open bars during fashion week, but if you’re truly covering fashion week for your blog and/or other sites, skip the parties, or reserve them for weekends-only with friends. When I was younger, I thought I was Wonder Woman and can tackle all tasks given to me 24 hours a day.  Now, at the age of 28 – I realized that I need to prioritize my schedule and keeping up with the fashion week schedule, writing, and partying at the same time is not going to happen.  I know a  fashion blogger who made the mistake of going to a party, and skipped the 9 am show the following day.  We didn’t think it was a big deal, but the following season, the PR contact said to her “We gave you a seat last season and you didn’t show up – are you definitely going to show up this year?”  She was caught off guard and embarrassed that someone was actually paying attention to her.  I came to the realization that just like we pay attention to designers, the PR people pay attention to their audience.

Have a great fashion week, bring plenty of business cards to hand out and smile at all times.   Your attitude and presentation is everything – especially in the fashion world.

Watch the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2010 Show LIVE on your computer

Marc Jacobs has chosen to LIVE STREAM his Armory show this season. This is a big deal for two reasons:

1. The MJ show is considered the creme de la creme of NYFW, a must see for fashionistas. A lot of good writers and editors are left out in favor of A list celebrities (i.e. Perez and Gaga last season). Now we can actually see the show in real time, and not read about it with small dicks drawn onto the images.

2. It makes the whole thing feel less exclusive, no? Which may backfire in turn…. but who cares? We get to see Marc Jacobs in real time.  I know that I love getting ready to go to the tents and see all the designers.  This is an event that I feel is better to see in person, rather than watch in your pajamas at home.

The show will stream live February 15th, 2010 at 8pm EST, and you can “RSVP” by going to www.marcjacobs.com (plus a chance to win 2 tickets to the actual show). But a warning- boot up the comp early, grab a snack, and hunker down; Marc is notorious for his inability to tell time. Past shows have started way late or super early, it’s never on time. So, RSVP and let me know how it works out.  Happy NYFW!

Victorie Focx Trunk Show

Constance Victory Small really knows the way to a fashionistas heart. On Sunday, November 15 – I walked into the White room at the Soho House for Victorie Focx’s Trunk show and fell in love with her first collection – “Bag to the Basics; a Return to Luxury”.  The Victoire Focx Collection had it’s official launch in Milan, Italy on March 2009 during Milan Fashion Week.  Bergdorf Goodman buyers were impressed by the Victorie Focx earlier this week.

My favorite bag  the red Karilaid Karry-All bag. This bag was the largest one in the collection and it’s made out of Nappa leather Python and Lamb Skin. Women always feel the need to carry more than necessary. We like being prepared – don’t laugh because anything can happen living in New York.  The bigger the bag, the higher the demand. Thus, making the Karilaid Karry All bag a stylish woman’s dream.

Most of the other bags consist of  large clutches – such as the Divadel” Clutch.  This clutch was made up of Swarovski crystals with a hand painted cobra and magnet flap.  The entire collection consist of lined signature “Victoire-ian purple” suede.   Women bring what they need when they go out at night.   Most of the clutchs on the market are small and you don’t have any room to fit anything in.   We either A.  end up losing things or B.  don’t bring half of the stuff we need out.   All of the clutchs in Victorie Focx’s collection are larger than average – thank god.

Constance vision of her fashion line occurred during one of her trips to Milan and Florance.  The architectural motifs of Roman and Florentine cathedrals inspired her Bags to Basics accessory line.   In addition to bags, Victorie Focx has colorful vintage wristbands and/or ankle bands that can spice up any outfit.

To sum it up – the Victorie Focx collection is stunning and unique, extremely detailed and chic.

Bags & Kisses,

Danya

The FAB Network

I wanted to get involved behind the scenes during fashion week.  Being a Twitter fanatic, I went under Twitter Search and typed in #fashionweek.  I found a volunteer position working for Boudoir D’huitres  on September 10th, at the Hosfelt Gallery (36th and 10th).  This opportunity was being offered by the FAB network (www.thefabnetwork.com).

Founder of FAB - Jessica Styles

FAB stands for fashion, arts and beauty and the founder is Jessica Styles (yes, that is her last name!).  This organization is a professional consulting company that assists with college students/young professionals with career and social opportunities.  I never heard of the FAB network before, so I started to do some research.  The website is user friendly and organized (job postings, volunteer opportunities, internships, etc) are posted on the right hand side, so you can click to any topic that you are interested in.  There is a blog that is entertaining, insightful and fun to read.  The blog talks about anything from fashion to landing your dream job.  The volunteer opportunities are great as well (especially when it comes to getting your foot in the door).

I had the opportunity to meet and work with Jessica.  She is a very talented, ambitious and outgoing.  Jessica used to work for BET/MTV as a National Accounts Coordinator and is now a life coach/founder of FAB.  She believes that everyone should have a mentor and that we need to be involved in networking (on and off the computer).  FAB started about a year and a half ago and it’s growing everyday with new followers.  People are starting to recognize the FAB network thru word of mouth.

Woman in New York look for organizations like FAB because it provides us with the opportunities that you are unable to achieve on your own.  FAB is all about helping you find a career that you are passionate about.  So if you didn’t join yet, then what are you waiting for? It’s free and fun, plus it will benefit you in the long run.  I want to end off by saying, “As we drive along this road called life, occasionally a gal will find herself a little lost.  And when that happens, I guess she has to let go of the coulda, shoulda, woulda, buckle up and just keep going.”

Single Largest Shopping Event in NY History

Do you remember that feeling you used to get when it was the night before Christmas and you were so anxious that you couldn’t sleep?  Well, that is the feeling that I have right now…can September 10th hurry up and just get here already?   I’m beyond excited for FNO and I have Ms. Wintour’s and Ms. Von Furstenberg to thank.

Ms. Wintour’s, aka editor in chief for U.S. Vogue, created the idea/event Fashion’s Night Out.  Her idea to save retail came from Paris White Nights, during which museums stay open all night.  Ms. Wintour’s enlisted the help of Diane Von Furstenberg, who chairs the Council of Fashion Designers of America.  Both fashion icons went to Mayer Bloomberg who gave the a-okay but told them that all 5 boroughs had to be included.  Ms. Wintour’s will make a guest appearance at Macy’s in Queens and Ms. Von Furstenberg will be at her store on Washington Street (corner of 14th street).
FNOI have been tweeting with #fno and putting together my itinerary for the day/night.  If you go to fashionnightout.com you can view all the participating stores, they will be open until 11 pm that night and FNO shirts will be sold at most of the large department stores and block parties.  40% of the sales will go to the national September 11th memorial and museum. There are so many hours in a day and I want to do everything!  Ivanka Trump will be at her store on 61st and Madison and Saks will have a red carpet event with designers Donna Karen, Carolina Hererra, Geren Ford present.  Tory Burch will host a block party in the meatpacking with DJ Cassidy and Sienna Miller will be hanging out at Intermix in Soho on Prince St.

The one event that I will not miss is the DVF party at her flagship store. Tracy Anderson, who is Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow’s personal trainer, will hold a Q&A season on health/fitness.  If you purchase merchandise at the store, you will be entered to win prizes, one being personal training with Tracy Anderson…and what woman wouldn’t want to win that package?
700 vendors will be participating in this city wide celebration to embrace the appreciation of fashion.

FNO will partake in a clothing drive which will benefit the NYC AIDS fund.  I will be volunteering on Saturday, September 12th..so come say hi!

Have We Gone Mad For Distressed Jeans…Again?

I JBrandremember being 10 years old and thinking Debbie Gibson was the coolest singer in the world, especially with her ripped jeans and big hair.  My mom used to laugh at me when I would try to explain to her the importance of obtaining a pair of ripped, washed out jeans.  It was frustrating because at such a young age, I was at the mercy of my parents and that didn’t really get me very far or score me any points in the fashion department amongst my peers.  Ripped jeans was the in thing to wear and since I couldn’t afford to buy it, I just took some scissors to my bedroom and decided to make my own pair.   When I was done ripping up my jeans, I put them on and realized that A. I did not look as cool as Debbie Gibson and B. I ruined my jeans.

20 years later, ripped/skinny jeans are back on the runway and  A-listers (Angelina Jolie, Sienne Miller, Kate Beckinsale) are even going as far as to wearing them on red carpets.  What is it about these ripped up, low rise skinny jeans that have trendsetters going nuts?  I didn’t understand how women can pay over $200 for a pair of jeans that are ripped.  The more you wash it, they more it will rip and then one day you will look at your overpriced, amazing jeans and wonder..why.

I don’t know what it is about this trend and I was determined to find out.  Being the shopaholic that I am, I walked really fast to Saks to try on some jeans.   As we all know, trying on jeans can be frustrating and you have to mentally prepare yourself before going into the store.  Finding the perfect pair of jeans is almost impossible and when you find them, you just have to get them.  I won’t bore you with the details of all the jeans I tried on but I can say that I was able to find the perfect pair of jeans.  The J Brand low rise black skinny distressed jeans  slipped on me like a glove and I was finally able to understand what the fuss was about.  I had no problem forking over my hard earned money for this overpriced, ripped up jeans.  In fact, I had a huge smile on my face and you would think that I just had an amazing dinner at Mr. Chow’s.

I’m quite sure this is what every fashionable woman in Manhattan truly believes in when they buy something outrageous.  After an expensive purchase, we try to justify the situation and assure ourselves that we did the right thing.  I feel as if I made the right decision in purchasing this article of clothing.  In fact, I actually convinced myself that these jeans are an investment and I will wear them forever, which I know is not the case, come next season.
