Tom Ford: The secret NYFW show video. Yesss!!!!

Happy New Year, everyone!  I hope you each rang in the new decade with lots of champagne, close friends , and prada!

Now that it is finally 2011… you know what that means, right? Out with the old and in with the new!

I wanted to give all my fashionistas a gift since I’m still in that giving mood.  Below is Tom Ford’s Spring/Summer 2011 Women’s collection at #NYFW Lincoln Center.

Spring/Summer 2011 Women's Collection

The hush hush event was attended by 100 guests which saw the designer showcasing his first women’s collection in over six years.  This was super exclusive and talked about for months.

Tom Ford told Vogue Magazine that his new collection was inspired by the 1970s: “The seventies is what I love. Soft, touchable beauty is what I love. I want to be touching the skin; I prefer no bra—I want to be able to slip in my hand.” Well these PJs certainly fit that bill.  They look touchably soft to me.  However,  as we wait for the official launch of the line, check out the video below to see exactly how inspired by the 1970s Ford really was.

One more thing, Beyonce was one of the fabulous models to strut her stuff on the catwalk.  Enjoy!

Sole Searching – decsions, decisions

NYC Sample Sales

Yesterday, fans of power heels were forced to make the ultimate choice: Manolo or Louboutin? In some cosmic act of cruel irony, the fates have decreed that this fall’s semi-annual Manolo Blahnik sale will fall the same day as the rumored Louboutin sale: Thursday, November 11. From 9am to 3pm women were running each other over at the Warwick Hotel at 65 W. 54th Street, about sixteen blocks north and a couple blocks east of the Louboutin sale. Could a very determined, very patient person be able to hit both? Possibly, but it won’t be easy. “Think of it as a day of soul searching,” suggests Madison Avenue Spy.

Here’s the (tarnished, dingy) silver lining: Nobody knows if those Louboutin dates are correct. A Louboutin rep told us point-black that they’re false, and last we checked, none of our usual sources had received invitations. Louboutin really, really doesn’t want crashersas they’ve reasonably pointed out, this is a private event, despite the overwhelming public interestso it’s possible that they’re going to be especially cagey this year. All things considered, the Manolo Blahnik sale seems like a much safer bet.

I would be curious to know if the  Louboutin sample sale really happened…anyone know?

Haute Social Media Mixer Event at Underbar

At Haute Social with Fashion/Beauty Bloggers Accidental Chic and IMakeupMaven

It seems like just a few years ago, not many people knew what a blog was. Nowadays, bloggers are not just doing this as a hobby – but they have turned this into a profession.  In turn, bloggers have achieved a certain celebrity status amongst their peers, and the social media industry.

On September 13, 2010 - I attended Haute Social’s Media Mixer Event at the trendy upscale Underbar, located in Union Square.  Paul Baranda, founder of Haute Social recognized me immediately when I went to give my name at the door. This event was specifically held for influential fashion and beauty bloggers – who spend a considerable amount of time tweeting, on fashion trends emerging around the world.

It was nice meeting people in person, putting a face to the name of all my Twitter friends.  I bumped into Accidental Chic aka Tiffany while waiting for the Buckner show to start at Lincoln Center.  When she gave me her business/blogger card, I immediately recognized her from her Tweets.  We did not have a chance to chat, but we both realized that we would be attending Haute Social’s gathering on Monday night.

The environment was relaxed and festive, people were sipping on some Social-tini’s (Haute Social’s drink of the night) and talking about the fashion shows that they attended.  The infamous IMakeupMaven and I were reunited from last years media mixer.  It was nice to see old friends and network with some new ones.  Nothing beats a sexy lounge, with tasty drinks and good people who want to discuss FASHION.

Goodies are always fun – it’s always a treat to receive a gift bag at the end of the night.  My gift bag included Dermablend Professional makeup remover and L’BEL skin care lotion.  Other sponsors who donated to the goody bags were Degree Women anti aging cream (my mother loved that) and FLIRT! Cosmetics.  All in all, Haute Social had a successful turnout and I look forward to attending the next event in February 2011.

The runway consisted of white, pale grey, charcoal and taupe – all basic colors, of all lengths.  The Macciato crepe short jumpsuit portrayed a confident and playful look, while the bare silk seersucker tiered dress displayed easy day to evening elegance.

Fashion Week 2010 – GULI Collections

Gulnara Karimova - Designer of GULI Collections

The Spring 2011 Collections will host nearly 100 designers presenting their collections at Mercedes-Benz Fashion week’s new home, Lincoln Center.

Many of them are celebrities, but only one is the daughter of a president. Gulnara Karimova, 38, whose father, Islam Karimov, rules Uzbekistan, had her New York Fashion Week debut on Friday.

Sitting in the second row, I was able to see the traditional national fabrics: Adras, Beqasm, Atlas, Han-atlas, Excelsior silk and Shoyi.  Gulnara’s collection consists of 34 looks and each model is complemented by GULI jewelry pieces.  All the ikats have been produced by GULI’s creative team based on ancient hand weaving techniques.

Gulnara believes that the Orient is strong in its traditions which can be easily incorporated into her fashion designs.  Gulnara places emphasis on the idea she advocates in her works: intertwining ethnic subtleties with a modern twist aka a western style.

“It is Western style because not too many people in our country would wear these clothes,” Karimova told me after the show.  “But at the same time, we’ll bring houses like Oscar de la Renta, Sonia Raquel, Inès de la Fressange…to Uzbekistan.”

The Legend of Ikat was placed in the press pack for Guli.  This story tells a tale of a young girl who approached a young master to acquire fabrics which would become part of the dowry for her upcoming wedding – they fell in love at first sight.  Her parents did not want her wedding with a wealthy noble man to be in danger, so they hid her in the tallest tower, away from the young master.

The story goes on to say that the girl was supplied with various sundry threads and dyes to make her own fabrics.  The girl was too busy daydreaming about her true love, that she started clashing yarns and mixed them with various dyes.  The girl let the end of the fabric out the window hoping that the young master would see the fabric.  She would just sit by the window, weave and cry.  The tears would go onto the clothe, blurring the fresh colors on the woven patterns.

The young master came across the fabric and was shocked by how beautiful it was.  He started to call the girl’s name but then realized that “a beauty this kind may only be created by a happy person”, and that she must be so in love and why she has not returned any of his calls.  His heart sank but he severed a piece off of the patterned cloth and left the town.

This story tells us that as a result we have unique fabrics with distinctive blurry-looking patters.  In Central Asia this technique of weaving silk is called abrbandi.  This lengthy process is carried out by hand.

It’s surprising that Karimova has chosen fashion over, say, political science, given that she holds a Ph.D. in the subject from the University of World Economy and Diplomacy in the capital of Uzbekistan, Tashkent. She is also the Uzbek ambassador to Spain.

However, it’s clear that Karimova’s got style. Today, her style is simple with black jeans with glitter on the bottoms, a classy white tank with a thick black belt, earings, and stilettos to complete the outfit.  Some say that she is the blonde haired modern version of Farah Fawcett.

The Fund Forum, the biggest Non Governmental Organization in Uzbekistan is chaired by Gulnara.  This charity supports talented children and youth by running art, education, fashion and design projects – which in turn, supports research and publishing activity.

In the eyes of the western public Gulnara Karimova is a young and modern face of Uzbekistan, she represents this developing country in the international market with class and dignity.  I’m sure New Yorkers will embrace GULI when it hits the stores in New York.

Cinderella and her Louboutin’s

My fondest memory of my childhood was my mom reading my favorite bedtime story – Cinderella.  This story was the ultimate fairy tale – a prince finds his princess, who is just a common girl.  My favorite part was when the Prince pocketed the shoe and vowed to find and marry the girl to whom it belonged.
When my mom got to my favorite part of the story,  I stopped and asked her a very important question.  I always wanted to know what kind of shoe my mom was wearing when she met her prince, aka my dad.  I knew that if I was going to try to impress a prince than I would wear a shoe that would knock his socks off.   My mom sadly shook her head and told me that labels do not matter in fairy tales and real life.   The prince fell in love with Cinderella because of who she was and not what she wore.

At age 10 – I was aware that this world was all about labels and love.  Five years later, my friends were obsessed with boys and I was obsessed with fashion.  While my classmates gossiped about which boy to go to the dance with, I daydreamed about shoes and accessories.  I would always run to my mailbox the 1st of every month, because my Vogue magazine would be in the mail, waiting for me.  As soon as my new glossy magazine would come in the mail, I would rush to my bedroom and put the do not disturb sign on my door.   My magazine took me to a different world, far away from the suburbs in Connecticut and I would slowly turn each page and stare mesmerized at the latest styles.

We love our shoes

Ten years later, I was a twenty-four year old single girl living and working in New York City.   I did not have to wait for a Vogue magazine to come to my house every month in the mail.  Fashion was everywhere in the streets of New York and I took it all in – New Yorker’s had a unique sense of style.  It was not like Connecticut, where everyone would wear the same shirt from the Gap.  This entire city was one big magazine.

8th floor - my favorite section

My favorite place in New York City is the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store – the 8th floor was my heaven.  There is a special elevator on the main floor of Saks, which will take you straight to the 8th floor, aka the shoe department.  The Saks flagship store has the biggest selection of shoes – so big that the shoe department had to have their own zip code.  I still remember when I bought my first pair of nice shoes.  I  leisurely strolled on the 8th floor of Saks – I was a weepy mess when I got off the elevator and this bubbly shoe salesperson was like, “Smile sweetie, you’re surrounded by SHOES!”  I had to crack a smile at how excited the saleslady was.  It seemed as if she was waiting for my arrival all day and the fact that I showed up did not make her day – it made her year.

I took my time and tried on as many shoes as I could – until I found the perfect pair.  I looked at the happy shoe salesperson and told her that I would purchase the beautiful 6” black patent leather louboutin shoe.  I  happily skipped to the elevator to go back to work – with my latest and greatest purchase.

Now, 4 years later – I am a proud owner of numerous over the top exquisite shoes, which include Jimmy Choos, Louboutin’s, Chanels, Manolos and Yves Saint Laurent.  I pick out the shoe I’m going to wear before I choose an outfit for the night.  I think of them as an investment and not as a purchase – I glow when people compliment me on my shoes.  Everyone has a passion, men love cars – women love fashion, or so I heard.

I hope to have a daughter in a couple of years,  so that I can read her bedtime stories.  Maybe she will share the same passion – I heard that the apple doesn’t fall from the tree.  I will tell her the tale of Cinderella and be prepared to answer the same question that I asked my mom years ago.  Because – we all know that I will be ready to wear the right show when I meet my prince.

Style is the way we speak to the world without words.  It distinguishes who we are as individuals and I always believed that it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.
